I recently received a rather interesting email alerting me to the fact
that certain Furtwaengler performances of Beethoven symphonies were
available for purchase and download at 2 Euros a piece (about 2.50 US).
According to the email, "to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the
great conductor's death, Spellbound Multimedia is remastering some of
his legendary Beethoven recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
and other famous ensembles..."
These must be available in CD form, the files are MP3 and sound quite
good -- a little echo & reverb I think is used to fill out the flatter
sound perhaps, but the sound is reasonable and the performances are
wonderful (what else can one expect from WF) and I am very happy with
the ones I have so far: 1.3.4 &5. Now they are announcing 6,7 &8, and
the violin concerto with Menuhin. Here are details:
