Bach - Vivaldi - Baroque music. I'd give her a bunch of Bach and other
baroque recordings to borrrow. I'm not keen on giving folks books to read
when they express interest in classical music; that can come later through
their own initiative (if they like). As fellow list member Dave Harman
indicated, it's best for an individual to go at her/his own pace in
whatever direction wanted.

From how Ed described his treating his female friend as a "subject", the
alienation process is likely a sure thing. I don't think it's a good idea
to take on the role of an academic teacher. Sometimes, the best intentions
can lead to heartache.

Starting off on Bach with his Brandenburgs or Orchestral Suites or other
orchestral concertos is a very pleasant initiation, but I have doubts that
it's representative of Bach's total output. Those works do not possess the
typical depth of Bach's music. I think it would be preferable to mix one
or two concertos in with an Art of Fugue or organ pieces or cello suites,
etc. Give the starter a healthy cross-section to deal with.

I have greatly enjoyed Bach's orchestral works over the years, but they are
largely light entertainment compared to many of his other compositions.
