It seems logical that mites carry diseases.  When you look at several
other insects you will find that they carry diseases also.  Examples
are mosquitoes (malaria & others), fleas (bubonic plague), tics (rocky
mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease) and now we have mites that carry
disease to our bees.
