Tom Seeley seemed to be vacillating in the 1970s:

Atmospheric carbon dioxide regulation in honey-bee (Apis mellifera) colonies
TD Seeley - Journal of Insect Physiology, 1974 - Elsevier

Measurement of nest cavity volume by the honey bee (Apis mellifera)
T Seeley - Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 1977 - Springer

The seasonal cycle of swarming in honeybees.
Fell, Richard D., John T. Ambrose, D. Michael Burgett, David De Jong, Roger A. Morse, and Thomas D. Seeley.
Journal of Apicultural Research 16, no. 4 (1977): 170-173.

-- But then, we don't know if it was his usage, or usage imposed by the editors of these different journals.

Almost all his pubs after 1980 use "honeybee."
