Good comments, Dean, but I noticed that they only intended to evaluate the impact of _small cells_ and fill factor on varroa reproduction, not assess Small Cell, the Religion and Way of Life, with its Saints and sacraments (Retrogression, Housel Positioning, Dismissing failures, etc.).

They were just trying to examine, in isolation, the effect of that one factor, not the SC way of life.

Did they do a good job? Good question, and your points are well taken. Looks to me like a students work, with Tom's name on it, too.

To my mind, though, they accomplished what they intended, and, yes, those hives were very seriously loaded with mites. I'm surprised they lived.

Did they answer the many questions about the SC gestalt?

IMO, only one.
