Because of his dishonesty in claiming the native bee extinct and his selfish impact on the remaining population.  He flooded the area for many miles around with his bees, destroying the efforts of other queen breeders.   South Devon is still a no-go area for native bees and the Buckfast problem is also felt over the county border in Cornwall where so much good work has been done.

I know of a professional breeder of native bees in S Wales whose business was badly damaged when someone set up a Buckfast apiary just a quarter of a mile away.
