Randy,  In the neuroscience community "consciousness" is usually relegated
to neocortical activity. Nociceptive neural activity that results
in behavior outputs that manifest as aversion and avoidance is not
necessarily an indication of pain. They may involve loops that in
vertebrates
that communicate within subcortical centers and even simply spinal cord
circuits.
Eg. Your leg may withdraw from a pinprick within 50 ms  without you having
become aware of the need to move your leg, although that might come later.
Later you may or may not note that you were stung by the bee.  I hope this
