Dear Friends:
In the film from the Royal College of Midwives (BF: No Finer Investment),
there is a section where the midwife is helping the new mother breastfeed.
The first time the baby latches on, the latch is poor although superficially
(if seen from the door of the mother's room) it looks alright. The baby goes
on to latch correctly on the other side.
I have used this little segment as a test when I have done in-services in
hospitals or offices. Show the first latch, pause the film, and ask the
audience how the latch looks. Many people are surprised to learn that the
first latch is a poor one.
