Hello All,
I need help with a puzzling case. I don't have time today to give the whole
case history, but this mom has a 7 week old who gained well for the first
3-4 weeks, and very poorly since then(things went well for the 1st month, so
we didn't see her again until her 6 week postpartum visit, that's when the
poor wt gain was discovered). This mom has had more plugged ducts than any
other client I've ever had in nine years. When she had some initial breast
engorgement in the first week after delivery, we recommended cabbage leaves.
When taking her history for slow weight gain, it came out that she's been
using cabbage to treat the plugged ducts (not our suggestion),although she
swears by it, and says its the only thing that really helps (has tried
lecithin, heat, massage, and various homeopathics).
Is it possible that the cabbage has contributed to her lowered milk
supply? A colleague says she remembers reading this someplace recently (she
thought maybe JHL)? Or has anyone seen recurrent plugged ducts and the
associated milk stasis lead to a greatly reduced milk supply?
Please email me privately, as well as posting to the list.
TIA from:
