Moms need prenatal vitamins IF their diets are not adequate in some
areas. Many moms, myself included, did not take prenatal vitamins. In my
situation it was due to hyperemesis and the vitamins upset my stomach -
esp iron. I delivered a 7-15 healthy girl and, after a c/s, had a hg
that dropped only to 12.5. Neither of us took supplements for the two
years we breastfed - just maintained a healthy diet. When I looked at
the literature at the time, this was supported. My OB supported this as
well, telling me that as long as I maintained a well rounded diet we'd
be ok. Pretty difficult with hyperemesis but after 4-5 months I was able
to and the growth sure caught up.
