I developed adult-onset diabetes while my fourth child was still nursing
(at age 2).
My doctor told me to wean *immediately* and start one of the anti-diabetic
pills.
I researched this with my breastfeeding supportive pharmacist and made
another appointment to dialogue with the doctor. He consulted a pediatrician
and an endocrinologist and decided to put me on low-dose insulin. It worked
very well. In 2 months my blood sugar was down, I was off insulin, and went
on to nurse until the "world average". This might be an option for a mom.
Warmly,
Alice Ernest IBCLC
