There really IS life after lactation work!
I was browsing the December issue of Readers Digest and one author's name
seemed familiar: Faith Andrews Bedford. Faith's article "New Attitude to
Gratitude" was reprinted from Country Living Magazine. As I read the
article, the names of people seemed familiar too. A few minutes later I made
the connection: Faith Bedford was ILCA's first president, and I knew she had
a love of and talent for literature.
A bit of background: back in early 1984, when the Lactation Consultant
department of La Leche League International was researching what would
become the lactation consultant field, JoAnne Scott and I knew that Faith
was volunteering as a "lactation consultant" at the University of Virginia
hospital in Charlottesville. One day we called her, and asked her to form a
new association, just for lactation consultants. Faith accepted the
challenge, called Kathy Auerbach, and together they identified 9 women
fwilling to serve as the first Board of Directors for this new entity. Faith
was ILCA's first President (1985-86).
Faith's current address was not listed in the article. The last I heard, she
and her husband Bob were living in New York City. If anyone knows of her
whereabouts or e-mail address, please let me know privately.
