When to give away pumps......Not only for WIC patients but for all (many
insurance companies will not cover the cost unless there is a documented
reason.)
I base it on data from my history and breast exam.
If a mom has, for instance, flat nipples that are likely to be a problem if she
becomes over full...I give her a pump and tell her why, and how to prevent it.
If she has inverted nipples and needs help to pull them out I give her shells
and a pump. I also tell her why and how to use. If she has a history of
overfullness or engorgement with an earlier baby, I tell her how to use a pump
to make siure this doesn't happen again (along with how to nurse often...).
Basically, I like to see if there is an indication for a pump and then teach
about using it for that indication. i also document on the chart why I did what
I did.
