I did this several times at the University of Delaware as the WIC
Breastfeeding Coordinator for the state. I spoke to the Community Nutrition
class, a senior level class and to Maternal/Child nutrition class (Senior
level and graduate level), twice a year to the Dietetic Interns. Two of us
spoke to nursing students each semester. The nursing students we covered
hands on information, latch, positioning, normal newborn stuff. With the
dietetics students I always started out with some statistics about the
dangers of formula feeding. This always got everyones attention. I used Dia
Michaels book as a reference for this part as well as the ILCA statement. I
went over the "magic" of breastmilk-all the cool things that are in there and
not anywhere else. Some anatomy and dispelled some common "old wives tales"
that they readily supplied. Covered some working and breastfeeding and
normal breastfeeding course of things. Gave lots of places to find more good
breastfeeding information. Kept it fairly consumer level as it was their
first information on breastfeeding-now isn't that a kick! It is NUTRITION!

The interns we had more contact with so I started with the same type intro
that was used for the dietetics students and gave them copies of Amy
Spangler's book. They were to have read the book by the time the bigger
class (2 hours) came around. I went into a lot more detail, including intro
to solids and when and if to wean. Many of the interns were so interested in
breastfeeding that they chose to use breastfeeding as the theme of their
special project.
