Jeanette, why feel like you need refs re: the Pepto bismol? (But check Tom
Hale's 1999 ed. for use when via breast milk.) They should be providing you
(and their clients) with refs! When this kind of situation comes up, I'll ask
for the HP's refs in a pleasant way , e.g., "Hi, I'm (so and so). Two of your
patients have contacted me in the last couple of weeks with (such and such)
and telling me (such and such) was one of the recommendations they received
from someone at your office. The lit I have available indicates that
recommendation might be of concern in (such and such) an area. I'd love to
learn about any new research you're aware of about this med (treatement,
etc.) so I can better serve your clients and other mothers and babies..."

Good luck! I'm with you--when did this recommendation start? Haven't heard
it--yet--in our neck of the world!

Karen

<< Subject: Pepto bismol???

It seems that I am ending 1999 with such a flood of problems I can only
hope that 2000 will be better!

 Most recently:
A mom was told she didn't have enough milk, so she started combining
breastfeeding and cow's milk formula in the hospital. By the time she go=
 t
home, her baby started to have some bowel movements with some mucus, so t=
 he
MD changed her to Carnation Good Start after every breastfeeding. Then the=

stools started to have red stringy and mucusy bowel movements, so they
changed her to Soy based formula, told her to stop breastfeeding and give=

the baby Pepto Bismol. It was at this point I was called in. As she was=

going by MD orders, it took me a while to get new orders, but of course
,mom was happy - baby's stools stopped, so of course the "medicine" was
working. My question - have they now started giving infants (2 weeks old=
 )
 this? =

I thought it was a one-time deal, but I just got home from seeing a secon=
d
one with the same instructions. this time I got to see the stool and fou=
nd
it to be normal breastfeeding baby stool. PLEASE give me some good
evidence I can use - other than the fact that P - B has aspirin in it! =
I
need to write to the MDs, but want to have some evidence to back me up - =
or
at least someone with MD after their name to refer them to! >>
