Dear Friends:
This is in response to Cathy Liles question about benefits of bottle
feeding for babies.
If HIV+ mothers do not have donor milk available, formula is necessary
for their babies; at least in the USA. If the baby is the one in 85,000 with
galactosemia, formula is necessary. If the baby has PKU, and can only
partially breastfeed, formula is necessary. If a mother has adopted, and
donor milk is not available, formula is necessary.
For those of us working with mothers at home, formula is sometimes
necessary to feed the baby until the mother can get her own milk supply up
and going, because donor milk is not available. For mothers who absolutely do
not want to breastfeed, who loathe the idea, formula will be necessary if
there is no donor milk available.
Gotta feed the baby something! Even if it is only the 4th best
alternative ( 1= mom's milk at breast, 2= mom's milk expressed, and 3= donor
human milk).
    Warmly, Nikki Lee
