A have a 3 month old patient who feeds and grows well.
Mom had thyroid surgery last week for Graves disease. While mom was
hospitalized the baby breastfed during visits and bottle fed expressed milk
while home.
Mom says since she got home about 1 week ago the baby is feeding more often,
about q2 hours in day and about every 1 ½ at night. He had feed about every
3 at night prior to mom's surgery.
Baby latches well, seems very hungry when he awakes, feeds both sides and if
mom tries to switch nurse he takes the first side again briefly then falls
asleep only to awake again in 90 minutes.
Mom feels full before feeds and soft afterwards. She can double electric
pump 2+ ounces on the left and 4 on the right. If mom tries breast
compression the baby gags on the let down.
My thoughts are to allow him time to readjust to mom being home again and
offer more frequent evening feeds before bed time.
Any other ideas?
thanks
Rob
