Bf at 6 wks is pretty "intense" in terms of the hormonal milieu. The way I
look at it anyway. Perhaps she has recently resumed intercourse too. Let the
mother know that in later months, or years of bf, the estrogen levels pick
back up for many w/ return of menses etc. To me this is a normal phase. I
would recommend a local estrogen cream if needed instead of a systemic
estrogen. Use of a good sexual lubricant, like astroglide, also works well
if the problem seems to be mainly during intercourse. Also r/o vaginal
candida.
Re the ppd: Weaning can be worse for some. I am not sure what the
contraceptives wuold do in this case. Seems treating the ppd w/
psychotherapy and /or antidep. therapy would be prudent.
