Dear Lactnetters,
I hope you have not discussed this over and over again already, in that case
i am sorra for bothering. I'm doing a search in the archives as well but I
think I might not come up with a result on this. Therefore I would like to
ask you this:
Today I was asked by a pregnant woman (36th weeks) about the possibility to
boil her milk before giving it to her baby. The reason she asked this for is
her HIV-seropositivity. The WHO-Paper on "HIV and infant feeding"
mentions the possibiltiy of modified breastfeeding by expressing and either
pasteurize (heat to 62,5°C for 30 minutes) or boil it and cool it to kill
the HIV virus.
Here are my questions:
Is this actually a safe method to clear the milk?
Does it still provide enough nutrition, e.g. proteins and such to the infant?
Does anyone of you have any experience with this?
How is the usual routine?
What do you recommend Moms in this situation?
If there are any other publications on this specific question, please give
me knowledge of it.
I would very much appreciate any answers especially if they are private
eMails as well, since I still am not able to read all the posts to LACTNET
in a timely fashion.
Thank you,
