Yesterday, I saw a four week old preemie (36 wk gestation). Baby was losing
weight while breastfeeding so doc put on formula. Mom still had milk but
somewhat diminished supply. She wants to make a go of it. I am not trained
in this area and really want to put this mom in contact with an IBLC ASAP.
The next 2-3 days I think will decide the direction the Mom takes. My
question: Does Medicaid pay for lactation consultant services? If so would
the referral need to come from the pediatrician? If you could please e-mail
me directly ASAP. I need to work out a plan before noon today because the
child has been diagnosed failure to thrive and child protective services is
involved. The baby's weight did improve over the past week while on formula.
Thank you for any help you can give,
JoAn Muncie, MS, RD/LD
