 My turn for a question to the Wise Ones,

 I've recently worked with 2 moms with very large breasts (in my opinion).
 One of them shared with me that her breasts were a size F.  The other did not
 share her size with me (as this is not something I ask about), but they had
 to be even a bit larger.  Both of these women were doing something I've never
 seen done before, nor have I ever heard about.  I admit, I have not been
 reading Lactnet for a while prior to the last week, or I'd probably know the
 answer by now.  These moms were rolling up a towel and placing it under the
 breast to help support the breast.  Both of these women called me for help
 with sore nipples.  After working with the first mom all day (I made a house
 visit and spoke to her on the phone every 1 to 2 hours practically all day
 and into the night), she gave up the next day (such a shame).  The second mom
 felt relief while I was there working with her.  By the next day she felt
 MUCH better by her account.  Has anyone heard of this towel technique before?
  Is this a practice you would recommend?  I felt it would create more of a
 problem (and it seems to have in both of these cases).  Any suggestions or
 opinions would be greatly appreciated.  It seems they were shown this
 technique in the hospital.

Veronica,
I am a D+ sized cup, and I use a cloth diaper rolled up to help support the
breast. I learned this technique as a help so that I could have one hand
free. Otherwise, the weight of the breast pulled the nipple out of the baby's
mouth (that happened more during the newborn period). The IBCLC that visited
with me when I was in the hospital for my second child suggested this to me.
She was large breasted herself, so I don't know if she discovered this
herself, or heard of it someplace else. Personally, I have found it to be
very helpful, and quite a few moms that have tried it have found it to be
helpful as well.
