Dear Mr. Salmans, President, WRS Group Ltd.,
I appreciate receiving your catalog of medical education materials.
There are many excellent products available to those of us who seek to
educate people in medical matters.
I would, however, like to explain to you my strong objection to page 2
in your most recent catalog. In with the group of promotional items for
health educators you display, of all things, a baby bottle! An item
designed to be used to feed infants a vastly inferior food than the one
that has been long recognized as the very best, breastmilk.
In no way can promoting artificial infant feeding rather than
breastfeeding be considered the act of a company whose purpose is health
promotion. The American Academy of Pediatricians states very clearly
that infants should be fed exclusively breastmilk for the first 4-6
months of life and should continue nursing for a minimum of 12 months,
longer if desired. The World Health Organization has stringent
guidelines restricting the marketing of artificial breastmilk. The
National Institute of Health, the CDC, and the FDA have all published
opinions that breastfeeding is superior for an infants intellectual
development, immunilolgical development, and overall nutritional
quality.
I would like to see you immediately pull these promotional bottles from
your inventory and replace them with a breastfeeding friendly item. If
you would like suggestions as to such an item, please feel free to
contact myself or the International Lactation Consultants Association's
(ILCA) marketing department.
Thank you for your time and your consideration of this correspondence.
Sincerely,
--
