yes, there is a documented connection between elevated cholesterol and
breastfeeding, but without being able to lay hands on the study (i just heard
about this once), i cannot say for sure, but i feel certain it was a mildly
elevated cholesterol level, not up in the dangerous ranges. and what would
prevent the doctor from treating the cholesterol, just as he would in someone
else? this sounds pretty silly if you look at it from the perspective of a
society where lactating for many years was the norm. "we won't treat you
until you wean" would begin to sound like "we won't treat you until you stop
that silly breathing, it's such an indulgent habit."

treat the patient rationally, not on the basis of prejudice ("breastfeeding
an older baby is gross and makes me feel uncomfortable, and i don't know how
to change my treatment recommendations to suit a mother still breastfeeding,
so i will just tell her to wean and then all MY problems will be solved.")
