>>I first saw this baby at the time of the clipping and she did latch on
immediately afterwards. Mom stated that her nipples felt good, baby sucked
continuously for about 15 minutes, mom's breast had considerably softened
after feed so we thought things were going well<<
Beth,
If mom's nipples felt good after that feed, baby probably wasn't chomping on
her then. Makes me wonder why he's started. Does baby have any sores in his
mouth or on his tongue? Could his clipped frenulum have become sore or
infected so that he is unwilling to extend his tongue now?
The Breastfeeding Answer Book has a couple of tongue exercises that might
help baby bring his tongue down (p 66). There's also a section on "clamping
or clenching" (p 70).
Considering suck training, odd that baby will latch onto your finger but
screams w/ moms. Does she use fingernail polish? Keep her nails clipped
short? Use hand lotion? Maybe she could change her hand soap? Were her
hands clean when she tried?
Just some ideas.
