The parents should talk to the derm to find out what are the exact risk vs
benefit of doing vs not doing the surgery asap. In other words, is the risk
of leaving the mole intact for now greater than the risk of
anesthesia/surgery at this time. Then they should talk to the anesth. doc
about the exact procedure and risks of gen. anesth. and explore options re
possible local anesth. or regional block anesthesia. Don't know if local is
practical for this surgery and don't know if regional can be done on babies.
But they need to find out all their options. They need to make sure all
their questions are answered. Then the parents together make the informed
decision, i.e. informed consent.

Re breastfeeding: Mom should be prepared to express milk during baby's
surgery/recovery time; maybe even stockpile some milk beforehand in case she
does not get to express when she thought she would (you never know). Have
her talk to the docs about preserving the bf being a top priority, so that
they know they can keep the IV going til baby bf post op and not give a
bottle etc etc. She may need to have some refs/articles to share beforehand
about baby going to breast asap upon recovery etc. Have all this worked out
before hand. Good luck to all.
