Hello again,

Just looking to see if there is any additional wise wisdom from the Lactnet
to help.

I have a new mom with a almost 4 day old boy. Birth was induced with
prostin gel and labor was hard and fast for mom. Recieved Morphine IM 2
hours pre-birth. Second stage was 40 minutes and assisted vigorously for
what Doc says was decels with contractions. (Later stated she didn't realy
have to vac, but thought she would just hurry things along). Anyways baby
born at 1530 hrs, very groggy, and has extensive bruising at vacuum site (it
really looks ugly!) did not nurse for first 9 hours. At hour 2200 hrs baby
still zonked, no rooting reflex, no suck reflex, only awoke when heel prick
done for CBC, then back to sleep.

Babe awoke at 0030 hrs (hour 9) rooting and hungry, nursed throughout the
night and during the next 48 hours.
Mom is now home and 12 hours after getting there baby has refused to nurse
(baby approx 60 hours old) since mom's mature milk has come in. She is
pumping to soften the breast and getting 20 cc per pump. Positioning is
great and her technique is fine, baby has had a great latch and transfer up
until the mature milk arrived. Seen by (relief) LC at birthing hospital, but
LC at odds as to why baby not going to breast. At present being dropper feed
abm and ebm. Mom's supply is established. Mom has strong desire to
breastfeed. She states her and hubby hit the wall of what to do last night.

Have suggested....

1. fingerfeeds with dental syringe to establish work of sucking.

2. Bedding in to establish nurture aspect of breast and not just food.

3. different approach of bringing breast and baby together, possible painful
head and neck and her hold and bring to breast is aggravating it. As in
bringing breast to baby and not handling head and neck to avoid pain.

4. Bath with baby and play womb sound tape with candles burning to recreate
womb (got this rebirth idea from you folks!! gonna try it!)

5. Attempt to change baby's idea that breast equals pain. This from point #3

6. Attempt feeding but stop as soon as baby stiffens and refuses breast,
feed with finger syringe.

7. She is going to get baby checked by home visiting chiropractor (due to
the vigorous vacuum).

8. She is seeing a LC tomorrow that I know and work with and is works with a
LC doc (the same ones that empowered my to unilaterally nurse through
mastitis!!!)

9. ????????? any other suggestion are very welcome.

(ps of course I will update you all at a later date)
