Dear Lin Brown,
Good luck on the funding and start of your program! After ours was
in place for one year, the OB pt. satisfaction survey was at an all time
high and surpassed most other area hospitals!! It was a 10 year dream of
mine come true. Two of the years spent in many inter-departmental
meetings and a search for funding. But we have a great program in place
now. We visit every breastfeeding mom for teaching/assessment, give out
our pamphlet. It is part of the pp package as far as billing. For a
consult, a mom with a problem, we fill out different forms and there is
an extra charge. We also have a private room for out pt. consults, one
of my colleagues ordered a love seat for that room, which I have praised
her genius since! The love seat works great for sitting alongside a
nursing mom and helping. We work an 8 hour day, usually, and take call
from home the remaining 16 hours of the day. Five of us LCs share 1.4
ftes. I may get 2-3 calls or none, from docs, nurses, or a pt. at home
with a question.
The on call piece sets us apart from other area LC programs, and we
have gotten calls occasionally in the middle of the night, but have also
helped a mom in her moment of dire need.
Hope you get all the funding you need, good luck, and have fun!
