Dear Wonderful Friends:
I love the latest posts where people are confessing to having outbursts
of truth in class and private practice settings. Truth is not popular in the
mainstream. Yet it keeps popping up, irrepressible. Thank goodness for a
forum where we can help each other.
Haven't we all been guilty of blurts, where one reacts honestly, as I did
to a father who called to rent a breastpump because the pediatrician told the
mother to stop breastfeeding and give formula because of jaundice? I wasn't
in my professional mode, having the night before just come back from two
weeks of vacation. So I reacted with laughter, "What a crock!" I replied.
"How does it make any sense at all to take a possibly sick baby (never mind
about the whole jaundice thing) off the best food in the world and give it
inferior food?" Then, I wanted to die. Fortunately, the father had a sense of
humor, accepted my apologies for unprofessional behavior, and his wife called
later and rented the pump.
The real confession is that it felt good to be honest. Not that I plan to
do it again, mind you! Warmly, Nikki Lee
