Hi! I've been nomail for awhile but am back and need some advice from
you all - I did a home visit yesterday for a mom who has a 4 day old
daughter - she is extremely engorged. I've seen engorgement before -
but she was sooo rock hard it was unbelievable! She had a M----- Pump
in S---- which she used with only drops of output. She alternated
between warm showers and ice packs. She's on motrin. She tried cabbage
once for 20 minutes. She is putting the baby to breast every 2 hours
until the baby self-detaches. While baby is nursing from 1 breast she
pumps the other for 10 minutes. She then uses a dropper (per
pediatrician) to give the baby EBM in addition to what the baby took
from the breast. I have a great scale and did test weighing which
showed that in the course of one feed last evening the baby transferred
1.1 ounces of milk. pretty good I thought for DOL 4 - so why are her
breasts STILL rock hard!!!!! How long can it take for them to
soften!!!!!! THANKS in ADVANCE! ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD BE DOING
(oh....she's doing lots of deep, alternating massage)
thanks....janna zempsky, cpnp, ibclc in west hartford CT where it's
raining
