Now seriously folks, it's not the vegemite.... it's just us
(we breastfeed, we use cloth nappies, sleep with our babies and dry our
clothes in the sun)
despite the rumours that we all drink beer and eat vegemite for a good milk
supply, I think that the main reason most mothers in Australia at least
start breastfeeding babies is that they are more relaxed about the whole
issue of food and parenting in general. Breastfeeding is seen as the usual
thing to do for newborns, and even mothers who plan to bottle feed, often
plan also to breastfeed for the first 6 weeks "to give baby a good start"
(figure that one out!)
Our hospitals don't hand out formula, formula companies don't send boxes of
the stuff around to our homes. When you consider that the whole population
of Australia is the same as some of your largest cities in the USA, I
suppose (being cynical here) that the market is just too small to be worth
the huge marketing $$ that are spent in America. NZ would be the same - just
not enough people and a culture that supports relaxed and instinctive
parenting. I just hope that we can keep it that way.
cheers,
Querida
