I have a mom who is becoming very discouraged. She has been pumping for
weeks now. Baby was 2 lb at birth. Her milk has never been used. Only
Progestimil (sp?)through a feeding tube. The baby is not having bowel
movements consistently and our Neonatology team (Drs. and ARNPs) agree
the baby can not have moms milk until he tolerates the formula. They
insist it will only "blow up his gut" worse. Poor mom feels like "what
is the use!" She is pumping less and less. I am tryiing to keep her
motivation up. She has been (gasp) throwing out her milk. She feels
the milk bank route isn't for her, she doesn't have the energy. The
nurses don't want anymore of her milk occupying the freezer, since the
baby has never even had any yet. I could cry for her.
I know Dr. Nancy Wight uses, when needed, fortifiers, with the tiny
preemies, any of the neos on the list avoid moms milk, completely, when
there is a motility problem? The baby was 28 weeks and now is 33 weeks.
Still so much to learn, especially with these tiny ones!
