Dear Kathy
A high cholesterol is normal in pregnancy and lactation. One study found a
level of total cholesterol of 8,20 mmol/l (3,17 g/l) at 36 weeks of
pregnancy, and of 6,85 mmol/l (2,65 g/l) at 6 weeks post-partum (Cholesterol
level and breastfeeding mom. D Oyer, NJ Stone. JAMA 1989 ; 261 : 1064).
Other study give same results (Effect of postpartum lactation on
lipoproteins and apoproteins. RH Knopp, CE Walden, PW Wahl et al. J Clin
Endocrinol Metab 1985 ; 60 : 542-47. Effect of pregnancy, postpartum
lactation and oral contraceptive use on the lipoprotein
cholesterol/triglyceride ratio. RH Knopp, RO Bergelin, PW Wahl and CE
Walden. Metabolism 1985 ; 34 : 893-99). It seems that this augmentation is
related to the low level of oestrogens and to the higher level of
triglycerid's catabolism in the active mammary gland, and is above all
caused by an elevation of the HDL-cholesterol.
