I imagine this trip to the NICU is amazingly stressful. I guess the first
question is, Can the baby have food, or is he NPO? If the baby is on
supplemental oxygen and having difficulty breathing, then he may not be
allowed to have any food right now. Sometimes when on supplemental oxygen,
a 5 or 8 french feeding tube is put down to keep too much air from getting
into the stomach. If the NG tube is for feeding, I don't understand it. A
term baby with a good suck should not need a feeding tube, but should be
allowed to breastfeed as it is less stressful for the baby. The IV is
probably providing 10% dextrose and the baby is probably also getting IV
antibiotics. If mom can find out what the feeding tube is for, that would
help. Is there an LC at the hospital? If so, this person should be
consulted to help Mom to communicate with the staff. Mom should keep
pumping to keep her supply up.

Good luck,
Anne Nans, Rn
