I speak in classes in nursing school, medical school, community health
education and dietary interns at our local university..
I take individually wrapped candy to use during class. The first 10 min or so
I cover advantages by having them pair up and list as many advantages of
BFing as they can list for 3 min ( set a timer). the longest list wins candy.
( It usually is about 20 advantages). I then show them the article 101
reasons to BF and explain some of the advantages. I then move on to
debunking myths-I aask them to give me some of the reasons moms don't BF or
don't want to BF on the chalk board ( giving candy for each response from the
class) and explain the technique for avoiding those problems after making the
list. Then I talk about helping moms get off to a good start with BFing for
the nursing students, developing bfing classes and resources for community
health education classes, and bfing research for the dietary interns ( who
have to do an independent study). For the med students I show specialized
feeding devises and also talk about bfing professionals, referral
information, and how important it is to have an IBCLC in your MD office!
I try to make it fun, and interesting and the candy helps them to remember
you!
I also am known for giving a jar of M & M 's to MD's in town when they do a
good job giving accurate information to a bfing Mom!!!
I am still working actively as a community volunteer with the Hurricane Floyd
and now Hurricane Irene flood relief so have not been online much for the
past 5 weeks. It is still devestating to see the damage.
