Dear Friends:
This is in response to Michelle's post about a toddler whose 4 front
teeth have to be removed because of "nursing rot" caused by nighttime
nursing. Now what a lovely comment from the healthcare professional! :-(
In the Ontario Dentistry Journal 1998; 75:23-27, there is an overview of
all the research about breastfeeding and dental caries. The conclusion of the
authors after examining about 150 articles was that there is NO evidence that
refutes or substantiates any association between breastfeeding and dental
caries. The published studies are generally poorly done, with little or no
standard controls or definitions. So if anyone is looking for a research
topic, this is one.
Warmly, Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, ICCE, CST
