Am posting this to all you wise ones for a mom who called me today with
some concerns about her breasts. She was scheduled for a C/S on Friday, but
the amnio they did showed the baby's lungs weren't mature yet so it was
cancelled. She is 36 weeks gestation. She was given a dose of
betamethasone and sent home. Today when she woke up her breasts were "full
and lumpy like they are right after birth". She wants to breastfeed so she
doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize her potential milk supply assuming
she'll deliver within a week or so. I suggested ice and maybe tylenol for
the discomfort as well as avoiding any nipple stimulation. She wonders if
it is a result of the steroid (unlikely I think or it would be more common)
or if because she was mentally prepared to deliver so her body was/is
getting ready. I would appreciate any words of wisdom regarding either why
it occurred or how t deal with it. Becky B RNC IBCLC
