I'd like to respond to Pamela's discussion on the "baby focused" reasons
for encouraging pumping and storing. As a chronic overproducer I can attest
to the "mother focused" reasons as well. After the birth of my first, I was
discouraged from pumping because it would over stimulate me. I had repeated
bouts of mastitis and was constantly leaking. I weaned at 8 minths.

After my second, I took a different tact...pumped for comfort....never got
mastitis and was deeply releived not to have to put up with the
over-fullness.

I was still nursing that baby 3 1/2 years later when my daughter was
born...no problem this time....tandem nursing was wonderful!

This thing about avoiding the pump must be individualized. For some moms,
knowing that it is an option to pump can be wonderful.

Susan
