to add to the discussion of noted problems concerning effect on suck
technique and milk supply:

expectant and new parents can benefit from an explaination that a newborn
sucking on a pacifier is using up all his limited amount of energy for
*nothing* - no fluid or nutrition - he may quietly persist and then will give
up and go to sleep with his little *Dehydrator* in his mouth. that scenario
repeated in a newborn may likely lead to dehydration that needs to be
treated, a weight decrease that is unacceptable, or a subsequent inadequate
weight gain.

the reported association of pacifier use and lower incidence of SIDS is
another issue though and may present a challenge from new and expectant
parents to BF educators.
