Dear Folks:
Growth charts are only one part of the picture. My neighbor's breastfed
son, who was breastfed for over 2 years, only just made it onto the growth
charts at age 8. Never mind that he was bright and healthy and full of life;
never mind that his dad is 5'8" and she is 5' 2"; she got lots of flack from
the pediatrician which resonated with her own feeding issues (she had
anorexia as a teen). Eating became an awkward, nerve-wracking event for this
mother and baby for a while.
Down with the tyranny of growth charts! They are only guides, one part of
an enormous picture. Actually, it's not their use, it's their abuse!
Warmly, Nikki Lee
