The other day, during the course of a conversation with one of our
paediatricians about a baby we are both working with, I happened to mention
that the mom told me she puts the baby down to sleep on his stomach. I had
suggested she *not* do this, because of the risk of SIDS, and I asked the
paediatrician's opinion. He said that he knew that the African moms often
lie their babies on their stomachs, but that he is not so worried about them
doing this as about the European moms. I was surprised. I asked why not?
He said " Well, because in 20 years of practice here I have only come across
perhaps ... 2 .. (he had to think hard) cases of SIDS - You see, they
*sleep* with their babies, in the same bed, so it's safer." So there you
have it. Nice, huh?
