I just heard that we have lost one of the great researchers in breastfeeding, David Baum from Bristol, England. He was riding a bike in some charity bike ride and suffered a massive coronary. He was 59. His body will be flown into Israel today and he is being buried tomorrow in Rosh Pina, one of his favorite places in Israel. He worked with Michael Woolridge in the 70's and 80's studying milk transfer and did much work in changing rigid breastfeeding practices that interfered with breastfeeding. He and Woolridge were the early supporters of trusting the baby, not the clock. I heard him speak here in Israel in 1989 or 90. He was then very enthusiastic about the studies they had done in Thailand. Here are some articles which he wrote together with Woolridge and others: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=8460537&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=1974942&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=3395599&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=3512348&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=7160336&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=7249997&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/htbin-post/Entrez/query?uid=626524&form=6&db=m&Dopt=b I could continue forever. We can see how much he contributed to the changes in feeding practices that we are working toward today.
