Jill.... I worked with a Mom whose third baby did this.  Mom was a
dedicated breastfeeder and wasn't about to quit, but the pain was
testing her limits.  I recommended CST (cranio sacral therapy) for this
baby.  After the first treatment, Mom had relief for 4-5 days.  Babe
started clamping again, so Mom took him back.  Each therapy session gave
longer lasting relief, and after 4 or 5 (can't remember) sessions, baby
never went back to clamping again.  He was hypertonic and had a lot of
tension areas on his head and face and neck from a very fast delivery.
