at the seminar i recently attended given by marjorie meyer palmer, she spoke
a great deal about how she introduces solid food (well, or any kind of food,
for kids who have been on no oral feedings) and she specifically said that
the idea of a "time window" limitation on learning to eat was incorrect. she
discussed children who had no oral feedings at all learnin to eat at various
ages, including three and four, and ten and twelve, etc.
i myself find it amazing how most people have completely bought what i
consider to be the "formula - baby food" concept. they are astounded that
they might not have to use formula in a cup (for a breastfed baby) or food in
a jar. my little friend gabriel, who comes to my house often, is six months
old and avidly interested in food. tries to give a roly-poly imitation of a
kosovo poster child as he follows bites from plate to mouth. i asked his
mother when she was starting food and she seemed rather surprised. as they
were all staying for dinner, i gave her a plate with some banana on it - he
dived right in. loved it, didn't need it pureed first. then he ate rice.
it was a big night, and the dad was really annoyed with me that he didn't get
it on video. guess it will teach him not to be late for dinner next time .
