I am currently going "to hell and back". 2 weeks ago I was turning a
Caesarian Section over on her side to nurse her baby - another RN walked in
with the baby which I took and latched to the breast - after checking that
all was well I went off to the nursery to do other work only to discover
that the wrong baby had been put the breast. The baby was correctly
labelled. I usually check the ID's but I had no reason to doubt the other
RN's intergrity and that she had given me the wrong baby - I wanted to be
sick!! I had to speak to the Mum - who thought it was very funny - I
reported it to the unit manager and she took me off to the other mother to
report what had happened - she was very annoyed - justifiably but settled
down later. There is no problem with HIV here. The hospital are now
conducting a formal investigation. I accept this and understand this
perfectly but ...... for the last year, since I took over as "breastfeeding
Sister" I have poured out so much to educated, support and encourage
mothers and staff and I feel so devastated and feel that my hard,
well-intentioned work has gone down the drain. There has been a lot of
opposition to some of the stands I have taken - ie stopping bottles,
stopping limited time at the breast and trying to establish the "Ten steps
to successful breastfeeding". Not the most popular person at times! A
friend has warned me that I could be given a final warning.
At the moment I can't see the wood for the trees and desperately
need some input from your girls and boys! Be careful we are very vunerable
and in a very "controversial" field! I would value any advice and
comments!
On a positive note the hospital now want me to give a lecture to all
new RN's coming to the hospital on breastfeeding.
