Hi all,
Congrats to all our new lactation consultants.
Now the question. I have searched the archives and could not find anything
on this problem.
How do other NICU's handle verifying breast milk. Do you treat it like a
med? Does it have to be verified by 2 RN's? The NICU at the hosp where I
work part time called today, because one of the MD's want Breast milk to be
verified by 2 RN's prior to giving it to the infant. The NICU has had 2
babies in the last couple of years get another mom's milk. The nurses do
not want to verify it X 2 because it would be a "pain". They feel that they
would not be as supportive of BF if they have to verify X 2. Of course they
need the info soon because the MD wants to start this policy NOW. Any
feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Beth Collins RN IBCLC
