Michelle,
Given that there are absolutely no policy statements at the ADA site -
see "Timely Statements and Positions Involvement" at
http://www.eatright.org/dpg/dpg22.html, I would suggest the following:
1 - a second opinion from a pediatric dentist
2 - requesting the specific reference from this dentist - I found
references that were NOT ADA that recommended against after 12 months
but one based on 3 cases in 1983 (http://parentsplace.com/expert/dentist/babyteeth/qa/0%2C3459%2C6790%2C00.html)
3 - Print out and provide the dentist with Debbi Donovan's far more
current and referenced statement on tooth decay and breastfeeding, oddly
enough at the same site as#2 - they should clean up their site - http://www.parentsplace.com/expert/lactation/special/qa/0,3459,6365,00.html
4 - contact the ADA to ask what their position is
This dentist's statement seems to be truly outrageous. He's saying that
any babies who get first teeth at six months should stop breastfeeding
at night. Uh, hullooooo!
