Susan - A tricky dilemma! I have an idea that no-one, including an LC, is to
give information on bottle-feeding to mothers in the presence of other
breastfeeding mothers, and that this is interpreted to mean that
bottle-feeding lessons should not be given in *groups*. Any mom who "needs"
to know how to bottle-feed her infant should receive *individual* personal
counselling. The closest refs I can find for this are pages 9 - 10 and 24
of the 1989 WHO/UNICEF statement "Protecting, promoting and supporting
breastfeeding: the special role of maternity services".
Although I have taught moms how to bottle-feed (hopefully EBM in the bottle,
but sometimes ABM supplements have been necessary) my personal stand is that
I willl not teach bottle-feeding to groups of mothers, or even groups of
other people (students, presumably?) I was recently a participant at a
UNAIDS workshop where replacement feeding was taught, but there were no
bottles (cup-feeding was expected). Even so, I was sickened!
