Excellent post Diane - the knowledge about nipple confusion is based on
observation (nothing wrong with that) but I think if we say definitely the
baby is 'confused' and can't learn to bf after bottles, we may be
misinterpreting our observations...
The other disadvantge of bottles in those early days is that the volume
given by bottle is often much greater than the baby would take
physiologically - I cringe when I hear of a baby being given even 30mls of
formula in a bottle on day 2, because he 'wouldn't suck at the breast'.
30mls is quite a lot of milk for a tiny baby at one sitting...almost
certainly more than he would get of colostrum. What does this do to his
'expectations' and his gut?
