Good morning...

I have a question regarding Sheehan's Syndrome. I read in Lawrence(513-514)
that the pituitary is more susceptible to damage due to excessive bleeding
because of it's increased size at the end of a pregnancy.

What about when a nursing mother, with an established milk supply, has an
large blood loss due to injury, illness, miscarriage, etc? Is the pituitary
less likely to be damaged because it is not in the late pregnancy, enlarged
state? Can a pituitary infarction cause an established milk supply to go
away, or does it only crash a yet-to-be established supply?

Should we assume that a marked decrease in supply would be due to the shock,
grief, decreased fluids and overall body trauma of such a situation and the
supply can be built up again as the mother recovers, or is it likely that
there would be pituitary involvement as well.

Kathy
