According to work done by Cheston Berlin (he will be at ILCA this year),
the amount of theophylline in chocolate does NOT cause a problem for a
breastfeeding baby. However, MANY MANY chocolate bars might raise the
level sufficiently to notice a reaction.
As a choco-holic and one who is reactive to it (I still crave it at certain
times; can you guess when?), I can tell you that a little may be tolerated,
but a LOT causes serious GI reactions. (No need to be more graphic, I
expect)
Is there any reason to suggest that a baby might not also react when
his/her level of tolerance is exceeded?
